Innovate UK: Bridging Research and Real-World Energy Solutions
The UK’s shift to a low-carbon energy system isn’t just about having good ideas, it’s about turning those ideas into real, working solutions. This project funded though Innovate UK has created the space for collaboration between Smart Grid Controls & Kings College London, so that research excellence can be matched with entrepreneurial drive.
Grid-Enigma is focused on commercialising new grid technologies called Power & Signal Multiplex Modulation, or PSMM. It’s a software innovation that allows electricity and data to flow together, removing the need for costly, hackable communication networks.
Thanks to this Innovate UK framework, we’ve already been able to take PSMM beyond the lab. With the support of Karbon Homes & 3T we ran a pilots demonstrating the sharing energy securely and affordably.
This is more than just a technical breakthrough. It shows how Innovate UK helps accelerate the renewable transition, strengthen links between academia and industry, and create real social impact.

THE PROBLEM
The future is electric - but the grid isn’t ready.
The UK is moving rapidly towards electrification, from heating and transport to everyday appliances. While this is essential for decarbonisation, it is putting unprecedented strain on the electricity grid.
At the same time, the generation mix is shifting. Renewables like wind and solar now make up a larger share of our supply. This is positive for carbon reduction, but it also introduces volatility:
-
Energy generation rises and falls with the weather.
-
Grid congestion is becoming more common.
-
Wholesale prices swing dramatically, driving up bills.
THE RESULT
-
Households and businesses in the UK face some of the highest energy costs in Europe.
-
Vulnerable communities, such as those in social housing, are hit hardest.
-
Businesses struggle with unpredictable costs, limiting competitiveness.
This is the challenge Grid-Enigma is built to solve.
